Kindergarten: Early Child Development Centre Education

Kindergarten, also know known in Kenya as early child development education (ECDE) is offered by the organization for children in the informal settlements and economically challenged communities. According to Government’s education program cycle, ECDE is a two-year program meant to admit children from age 4 for preparation and orientation into the formal primary education program. However, many centre offering ECDE prefers to admit the children at age 3 as a result of the child care and economic pressures that confront parents, particularly mothers at home against the backdrop complementing or generating family income. They prefer to send the children school early at age 3 for care and as springboard for next levels of ECDE so that they can be free to engage in income generating activity during the day.

Grapesyard ECDE center is a school within a school, with a section head who report to the primary school head teacher. The centre has a capacity to hold 300 children who are aged between 3 to 5 years. At year six, children graduate into primary education grade one.

It receives children from our child protection centre and the community as well.

Mothers, especially those of teen age are tipped on the best practice on child care and support. Hygiene, balanced diet at the centre through period meetings at the centre.

Besides education, the centre also server 10 am porridge for children so as to get the energy needed to push them until lunch time.
